Lomond Walking Holidays - Guided Hiking Holidays, Scotland

The Rob Roy Way

(Grade 2 ; 70 miles (111km))

Departs Stirling Station 10am. (Departure from Stirling am of last day).

If you have experienced the West Highland Way then you’ll love this walk. It traverses Central Scotland’s finest mountain scenery wending it’s way along loch sides, across desolate moors and through ancient woodlands. Starting at Aberfoyle in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park we pass through the gently rolling Menteith Hills, with superb panoramas across Loch Venachar to the lofty summit of Ben Ledi.

Passing the thundering Falls of Leny another scenic Loch-side walk brings us to the small village of Strathyre.

Tracing the old route of the Stirling - Crianlarich Railway we pass the end of Balquhidder Glen (burial site of Rob Roy) and climb Glen Ogle, often referred to as the Khyber Pass of Scotland.

Mountainous views await those cresting the pass with the Lawers Range above Loch Tay rising to a little under 4000ft. The route then traces an eastward line across very different country. The drier climate of the Eastern Highlands leads to a proliferation of heather and abundant Grouse moorland. We pass through mile upon mile of heather moor before descending to the shores of Loch Tay.
The walk takes in Glen Almond, Aberfeldy, the famous Birks of Aberfeldy, famous Salmon river, The Tay before a last ascent over the hills to the popular resort of Pitlochry.

This route is very tranquil and is a true escape to parts of the Highlands that are often by passed for the more popular honey-pots.
